Laboratory Process Automation Engineer

Description

The Laboratory Process Automation Engineer contributes to the development and implementation of automation systems and workflows to support the processing of samples in a clinical diagnostics laboratory environment. This individual collaborates with a team of scientists and engineers on projects to conceptualize, design, develop, and implement solutions designed to optimize the performance and increase the efficiencies of the laboratory processes.

Principal responsibilities of this position include programing liquid handling robots, building rapport with end-users, and coordinating with cross-functional teams. Development and integration of the automation systems and related software tools, preparing the documentation for equipment validation and operating procedures, and ensure successful implementation in the labs. Additional responsibilities include user training, troubleshooting, optimizing the workflows, and on-going support for the end-users.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and/or modify existing scripted methods by interpreting lab procedures in good working order following GLP guidelines.
  • Generate and document automation requirements and process steps in JIRA and other software tracking software.
  • Respond to script related equipment issues in a timely and intelligent manner.
  • Document all equipment related activities to assure compliance with CLIA/CAP and ISO 15189 requirements.
  • Optimize liquid handling performance of instrumentation through calibration, liquid handling and lab-ware techniques and integration of third party devices.
  •  Integrate Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) with automated systems using API calls. LIMS experience is a plus.
  • Ensure that all work performed by external contractors is completed and documented in accordance with the site quality system in coordination with equipment manager. 

 

Requirements

 

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • BS or MS degree in Biomedical engineering or closely related scientific field with Technical proficiency and experience in automation and systems development and integration for the life science industry; especially with robotics and liquid handling systems.
  • Experience in computer programming is highly desired.
  • Strong project management skills, organizational skills, and written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Flexibility and self-initiative required to support several simultaneous automation projects.
  • Preparing User Requirement and Testing Procedure, Standard Operating Procedures, and related documentations
  • Biotech, pharmaceutical, Lab automation providers, or clinical-laboratory experience is highly desirable.
